If you want to be a songwriter, the industry has changed a little bit. A&R people don’t necessarily have the ears that are of legendary story. I think people need things spelled out for them. I think that one of the reasons I’m able to be a songwriter for other people is simply because I have a name for myself. I’m not very good at making demo tapes. My point being that I think it really pays to be good at producing your own tracks. I think you should be proficient in Pro Tools and keyboards and as many instruments as you can because you need to make a mini record for no money. And when you write a song, you want it to sound like a hit instantly without them having to guess and hear it. When I write a song, I can’t program a computer – I never learned anything about technology – and so I’m actually kind of limited and that’s where my name helps me is because people, they’re kind of willing to look past it. But I actually will write with other people that are good are producing demos on their own without hiring a band and spending the money on that because it does me a service. You know, we’re able to write and then, on a computer, they’re able to – we’re able to – make it sound like a hit record instead of a somebody just getting a little guitar demo. Something[ph] like my – part of my voice, you know, try and make as great demo of a song as you can for as little money as you can. I think if you want to be a songwriter, one of your best thing to do is network with other songwriters. I think that’s one place where you’re really looking to find other writers that do have success, that have some status, because songwriting really is an industry where you have to prove yourself and, once you’re proven, people keep coming back to you. Then you have to keep delivering. But it’s kind of hard to break into. Again, I still think it comes down to a great song is a great song. You need to listen to what genre you’re writing for and try and write the best hit song, and being a songwriter for other people is pretty much about hits.
