Pros for me are whoever said “money doesn’t solve all your problems” isn’t entirely wrong, but it’s not entirely true. It helps. Not living in my car, not being able to afford medication, not being able to afford going to the movies, all that sucked and it’s really nice to not struggle like that, frankly. I love it. I love it every day. The simplest things give me pleasure. Getting on an airplane and being able to book a ticket last minute thrills me. I’ve never been a decadent person. I don’t have fancy cars or I’ve never been a very flashy person. That’s not what’s so great to me about it. Not struggling to survive is a dream come true. I think another con is I get paid to do something I enjoy and I never thought my life would work out that good. I thought I was going to have to do kind of a soul-sucking job that I hated and do what I liked in my spare time, and it didn’t work out like that. I get paid to write songs and it’s a treat. I revel in it every single day. A con for me would be I’d be very happy to be rich and not famous; that would be just fine with me. If I could do my job, that’d be great. I find the attention a little bit hard. It’s flattering and I really am thankful that people buy my records and that I’m famous, you know. It gives me the opportunity to do what I love. And, as a writer, it tears on me a little bit because, as a writer, you need to watch people. I’m a voyeur and I need to study people and watch them and, when you’re famous, it’s very counterproductive. It’s really hard for me to sit on a bench like I used to and just watch everybody and be nosy and poke into their lives because they kind of notice me and that’s a little bit of a con, but I’ve gotten by. Don’t worry.
